Growth isn’t everything
A vital aspect of my coaching is encouraging my clients to make their businesses better before bigger. From an outside perspective this might seem like I am discouraging leaders from aiming for growth; this is not the case.
Say no to growth for growth’s sake
Growth is almost entirely accepted as a positive process. Children want to grow up to be as tall as their parents, collectors wish to grow their catalogue of items, and demonstrating growth in one’s character is to become a more rounded person. However, growth for growth’s sake is not worthwhile and will often produce results that do not align with the initial intention.
Pushing for growth when your company is unprepared for greater demand, or new ways of working, will detrimentally affect performance. This means aiming for short term victories that might appear like progress, but which actually create conditions that are unsustainable. In some cases, these rushed solutions can evolve into more damaging elements, that curtail future development.
Get better before bigger
The quest for expanding your company is admirable, but be sure to approach this target in the correct way.
Becoming better before bigger means improving your existing people, processes and systems, so your organisation is ready to take the next step. There are three important stages to this:
1. Reframe – Assess the company you have. What are you most proud of? What might require some change? What elements could springboard your growth?
2. Rethink – Consider new perspectives to solve the challenges you have. This means embracing a new spirit of openness and curiosity to take you beyond your current ceilings.
3. Refocus – After you have planned ahead and thought of new possibilities, implement a strategy of practical actions to ensure tangible results. This stage brings together the theory and aspirational ideas with a structured approach to realise them.
Choosing this more patient and thorough approach is far more likely to help you reach your goals.
Guiding you to your best
This philosophy is ingrained within every part of my coaching. Working together with my clients we make new discoveries, that shape their ideas and often demonstrate that they can achieve far more than they initially believed possible. I share an array of ideas and ways of thinking with them, to stimulate their ambition and show them that their targets can be met (or even exceeded), if they take the correct actions. Once we have done this, they can go back to their businesses and introduce the new frameworks and methods into their day-to-day work.
Why choose better before bigger?
Although my mantra of better before bigger could seem anti-growth, it is far more about attaining growth in the correct way, so a company can continue to develop sustainably. This drive for improvement is so effective, because it produces capability amongst your people and systems to meet their targets, which consequently breeds confidence to make these victories consistent. Don’t become obsessed with vanity metrics, which to an outside perspective may seem impressive, but in fact, hide the suboptimal aspects deeper in your organisation.

One of the most exciting and liberating parts of adopting the better before bigger mentality, is the confidence this will give you. By preparing accordingly, you will feel more assured that the decisions you are making are right and they will bring more predictable and desirable outcomes. This philosophy demonstrates that above all it is within your power to achieve whatever you want, if you choose to plan ahead and act in alignment with this vision.
Becoming the biggest is not always an option, but becoming the best is within your reach.
